TRP is issued for a period of three years. If you plan to live in the Russian Federation a long-term period, the next step after receiving your TRP is to submit documents for obtaining a permanent residence permit (PRP). You can do it eight months after receiving a TRP, but no later than 4 months before its expiration.
If you do not have time to apply for PRP, you will need to leave the Russian Federation before your TRP expires, as TRP cannot be extended.

By obtaining TRP, a foreign citizen gains the following opportunities:
— the right to legally reside in the Russian Federation for three years;
— the right to register at the place of residence for the entire duration of TRP;
— the right to work in the region where TRP was issued, without obtaining a patent and a work permit;
— the right to apply for a permanent residence permit in Russia;
— the right to obtain OMI policy (compulsory medical insurance policy) and receive free medical care.

The Migration Service cannot make a decision to refuse the issuance of TRP at its own discretion. All grounds for refusal (there are 16 of them) can be divided into three groups:
— a foreign citizen has violated the law (both in the Russian Federation and abroad);
— a foreign citizen has a disease that is dangerous to society;
— the Migration Service’s decision depends on the correctness and completeness of the information provided in the application for the issuance of TRP, as well as the content of the prepared documents.

According to the legislation, a foreign citizen is not obliged to stay in the Russian Federation without leaving the country until a decision is made on their application. Personal presence is only required at the time of submission and receipt of documents.
Yes. A foreign citizen is currently able to extend their visa and stay (be registered) in the Russian Federation by presenting a certificate of submission of documents. However, it should be noted that while the process of extending your stay (registration) is clear, the extension of your visa requires special attention:
— a visa is only required to cross the border. Thus, if you plan to stay in the Russian Federation without leaving the country during the entire time your documents are being considered, you do not need to extend your visa.
— there is a certain legislative conflict, so the type and category of visa do not change when it is extended. For example, if you are staying in the Russian Federation on a business visa, you will still be considered on a business visit, even though this may not correspond to the purpose of your stay.
— a visa is only required to cross the border. Thus, if you plan to stay in the Russian Federation without leaving the country during the entire time your documents are being considered, you do not need to extend your visa.
— there is a certain legislative conflict, so the type and category of visa do not change when it is extended. TRP gives the right to work in the Russian Federation without obtaining a work permit or patent. Unlike a residence permit, TRP is tied to the region in which it is issued. The law provides a number of exceptions to this rule, but they are not suitable for everyone, as they only applies to certain professions or job positions and only give the right to work in another region for a limited amount of time.
